The police men who pulled the trigger did not think twice, they acted upon their prejudices and expectations. And this end is not an individual destiny of a boy being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The lovestory is supposed to have a happy ending, but while reading there is the constant feeling something will go terribly wrong. Jeremiah dies and with him all the thoughts and hopes the reader develops while reading. The unexpected ending totally pulls the rug out from under you. This young boy seems to be very happy and he is loving, against the overall opinion of the society, a white girl. By the end of the book I, as a reader, felt sympathy for Jeremiah.

The two most affecting relationships within this development are on the one hand his affection towards Ellie, and on the other hand his relationship to his mum and dad. Throughout the book the reader can observe a Jeremiah who is constantly developing bit by bit. On page 11 his thoughts are "But sometimes, looking in that mirror, he had no idea who he was or why he was in this world". Confused by these circumstances and himself growing up, getting to know himself he somehow doubts who he really is. Through everyday reactions of people, or several commercials he's getting the feeling that there is something wrong with being black. This way of thinking lasts during his childhood, but soon enough he feels that there is some kind of resentment towards black people in a mostly white society. Everyone seems to be some kind of black, if it's not the skin it's the heart. In his neighborhood, Fort Greene in Brooklyn, he feels secure. A black, happy, young boy who realizes that being black, depending on your surrounding, can have both negative and positive side effects. But just after the first few pages you get an idea. A recent tragedy that happened in the United States somehow remembered me of the first few words I've read in this book - for the ones like Jeremiah.īefore you continue reading you don't know who Jeremiah might be.
